Finally, a Tinea Versicolor Treatment That Works!

Who has heard of Tinea Versicolor?  Unfortunately, me.  I first remember these ugly little splotches popping up when I was a teenager…most prominent on my back/chest.  While mine is not as severe as these photos I found online, and it sometimes goes away for months and/or years,  it’s just as annoying!!!  For those of you blessed enough not to make Mr. Versicolor’s acquaintance, here’s some info:

Tinea versicolor: Overview

Also called pityriasis versicolor

We all have yeast living on our skin. When the yeast grow out of control, a person can get a skin disease called tinea versicolor.

Your dermatologist may tell you that you have a fungal infection on your skin. Yeast is a type of fungus.

Many people get tinea versicolor. It is one of the most common skin diseases in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. People who live in tropical areas may have tinea versicolor year-round.

Tinea versicolor: Signs and symptoms

The first sign of tinea versicolor is often spots on the skin. The other signs and symptoms are:

  • The spots are lighter (sometimes darker) than the surrounding skin. The color of the spots can be white, pink, salmon, red, tan, or brown.
  • The spots can appear anywhere on the body.
  • Spots can be dry and scaly.
  • Skin may itch where the spots appear.
  • Spots become more noticeable as the skin tans. The yeast prevents the skin from tanning.
  • Spots grow slowly.
  • As the yeast grows, the spots can combine and form patches of lighter (or darker) skin.
  • The spots may disappear when the temperature drops and return in the spring or summer when the air gets warm and humid.

Fun stuff huh?  Did I go to a dermatologist?  Nope.  I’m a self-diagnoser, and I’m not afraid to admit it because I’m usually correct (90% of the time anyway).  Additionally, I’m more confident in my “diagnoses” because it’s been supported by 2 doctors–I went there for random things (an allergist and a GP for a checkup) and they both noticed, commented, and called it by name.

Now to the treatment, man, this crap is hard to get rid of.  It acts up more when I’m hot and sweaty which is a lot since I workout quite a bit, and live a pretty active lifestyle in the super hot Midwest.  The most common treatment is:

Medicine applied to the skin: There are anti-fungal shampoos, soaps, creams, and lotions that can keep the yeast under control. The active ingredient in these medicines is often selenium sulfide, ketoconazole, or pyrithione zinc.

This has been my go-to.  I’ve done Selsuin Blue (yes, the dandruff shampoo, contains selenium sulfide), which consists of letting this shampoo sit on your skin for an allotted amount of time, and then showering it off.  The downfall is that this sometimes burns my skin, and has occasionally left a bit of a scar.  I’ve even done Monistat 7 (no, it’s not just for hoo-has).  All of these treatments are time-consuming and expensive.  I’ve done more things than I can even go into on this blog post.  Some worked but took 5000 years, some didn’t work at all, and some kept it from getting worse.  None of them worked very well.  I was tempted to try anti-fungal pills (which I despise taking and putting weird things into my body) but I was getting desperate.

Anti-fungal pills: A dermatologist may prescribe these pills if the tinea versicolor covers a large area of the body, is thick, or often returns after it is treated. These pills are taken for a short time. But anti-fungal pills can cause unwanted side effects. They can interfere with other medicine that you take. A dermatologist will monitor a patient who takes this medicine.  Umm…no ma’am!

I was honored with the opportunity to try TVT Sensitive from Elk Haven Herbals complimentary in exchange for my honest review.  I had low expectations honestly, but boy did this stuff make my life!

tvt sensitiveI’m not going to lie, when I first received it and opened it, it scared me!  To me, it had a faint bleach smell.  Yes, you heard me, bleach!  I thought, there’s no way in hell I’m putting that on my skin.  Now, let’s keep this in perspective, I have a REALLY sensitive nose.  No, it didn’t smell like bleach super bad, like I was getting ready to wash a load of whites…it was just faint.  And, the ingredients are ALL NATURAL.  But still, I’m a chicken.  So I put this stuff up on my shelf and thought, no way!  I left it for about 2-3 weeks.

In those weeks, my versicolor roared…rejecting the outside bike rides my husband and I were taking in 90 degree weather.  It spread from one little friendly spot on my back, to all over my entire back.  No, I didn’t take pics, because I don’t like looking at it nor showing it off. 😦 But trust me, it was bad!  I’m blessed enough to where it doesn’t much spread beyond my back and it’s mostly covered, but I do enjoy wearing tank tops etc and it makes me self-conscience for sure.  I thought, screw it.  What do I have to lose?

I tested it for a day or 2 on a small part of my body.  Then I braved up, and put it all over myself every night before bed as the directions instructed.  I was diligent, I did not miss a day.  A week goes by and it still looks the same.  On that second week, I thought I noticed some SLIGHT improvement. Honey, by week 3, I was a fan!  There was no disputing that this stuff was killing the ugly fungus, and restoring my skin to normal!  After about 5-6 weeks, the versicolor was completely gone!

Needless to say, I am a fan for life!  I will ALWAYS have this stuff in my cabinet, and I’m still using it periodically for maintenance.  It’s all natural, and I experienced no skin irritation or ugly side effects.  The price point isn’t bad (it’s a thin liquid that goes a long way), and truly, for great ,clear skin, isn’t it worth it?

Our Tinea Versicolor Treatment for sensitive skin at Elk Haven Herbals provides the necessary concentration of nitrogenous compounds to eliminate an often incurable tinea infection. By combining the nitrogenous compounds with a base of aloe vera, this product reduces the risk of reaction for those with skin sensitivies. Our eight ounce bottle should last on average two months with daily treatment.

So, do you have Versicolor or know someone that does?  What has been your experience?  Hi-Five, dap, head-nod and a twirl to Fashionably clear skin!

Ipsy: Illamasqua & Manna Kadar Beauty Plus a Skin Win!

Ipsy has been serving up some real winners lately!  My bag had a sweet hodge-podge of goodies, but I wanted to chat about a couple of items that I’m currently holding near and dear to my heart!

Fantasy_compactFantasy 3-in-1 Blush Highlighter Eyeshadow is pretty dang sweet!  I won’t be using this as a blush as it won’t match my skin tone, but I used it as an eyeshadow and I LOVED the results.  The sparkle was rich and pigmented, without being cheesy!  It blended with the other colors very easily–I can’t wait to try it as a highlighter.  It’s a little on the pricey side to me if not included with Ipsy, but if you’re game, it’s worth a try!

Our Fantasy 3-in-1 is a pearlized powder blush, highlighter and eyeshadow. It has a special light and velvet-like texture which glides on smoothly and evenly to provide the perfect amount of color for a healthy glow on your eyes, cheeks or desired areas for highlighting.

  • Available in 1 Shade- Fantasy (Nude Blush Pink) to complement all skin tones
  • Can be used on all skin types
  • Pearlized Powder for a shimmer appearance
  • Lighweight and applies smoothly
  • Pigment-Rich
  • Screw off pot  CLICK HERE FOR FOR FANTASY 3-IN-1
precision ink
Illamasqua Precision Ink in Abyss is quickly becoming one of my new faves.  In my previous post Everyday Makeup Checklist, I told you that Elf’s black eyeliner is at the top of my list.  This still remains true, but what I am enjoying about this eyeliner (also black) is that it isn’t as shiny as Elf’s Another item of note is that the applicator isn’t flexible, and I personally enjoy liquid eyeliners that have a bit of a flexible end–it makes for an easier wing (for me).  This one is a bank-breaker in my opinion–I mean not really, but certainly on the higher end ($28).  Just another reminder how good of a bargain Ipsy truly is (maybe the one on Illamasqua’s site is bigger?)!
Create looks with attitude that no one can ignore with Precision Ink in Abyss. Precision Ink’s fine tip allows for defined application. Long-lasting and waterproof it’s perfect for use anywhere on the face and body to bring out your bold side. You can even use it as an nail art pen; simply seal with Illamasqua Top Coat

rise n shine

Time to search back in your memory banks…remember months ago we talked about Rise ‘N Shine Online?  I used their Bentonite Clay on my tootsies!  Softville (see previous post)

Well, I received their Whipped Shea Butter Scented with Lavendar.  One word, impressed!  Okay, so if I’m required to use more than one word, let me just say this…Shea Butter has a unique stinky smell.  I don’t care from which company, it’s just an acquired smell.  I love Shea Butter, it makes my skin fabulous, and the benefits outweigh the funk. Additionally, the scent dissipates fast.

Rise ‘N Shine did something grand when they added the lavender to this!  I am not even a lavender fan, it’s just not a scent that tickles my britches.  But this is great, light and still feels wonderfully soothing to the skin, providing lasting hydration.

Side note:  I recently used their Bentonite Clay again mixed with organic Apple Cider Vinegar for some skin issues that I have, and it made a REMARKABLE improvement in simply one use…no lie!  They also have great prices, check out their site for some of their other organic products!

**I received this product for free in exchange for my honest review

So what did you receive in your Ipsy this month that you’re in love with?  And, are you a Shea Butter or clay fan?  Will you be trying Rise ‘N Shine Online?

Melt Cosmetics & Christina Moss’ Organic Soap

It’s been coveted for a long time…watched from afar.  Drooled over–it made my heart skip a beat.  I wrote its name in hearts, and often dreamt of the day when we would be united.  I have been in love with twins, not identical, but fraternal.  Yes, it’s freaky, don’t judge me!  I love them both the same.  And on Valentine’s Day, my world was rocked when I received them both, courtesy of my husband!  Melt Cosmetics’ Love Sick and Dark Matter Stack!  LOL!  What else could I have been talking about?  Get your mind out of the gutter!

If you’ve followed me, you know that I’ve had a major thing for Melt Cosmetics.  I’ve tried their lipstick and loved, and have really wanted the eyeshadows…but I’m such a drugstore girl, I’ve had a hard time finding the desire of coming off of $48 for 4 shades.

See previous post regarding Melt Cosmetics

But baaaaaby, thank goodness for holidays and gifts! Let’s discuss!

melt lovesick

The Love Sick Stack!

PROMISCUOUS- a beautiful color changing violet-blue! Use it alone, or combine it with black to reveal a completely different shade!

FIXATED – a gorgeous matte grey inspired by one of our favorite lipsticks, Space Cake, so pigmented and cool you have to see to believe

AMELIE- a perfectly peachy gold, you’ll want to add it all over Cheeks! Highlight! Eyes! It glistens and glides on with ease

LOVE SICK- a beautiful ultra-matte burgundy-red …inspired by our most popular lipstick 6six6!

dark matter stack 1.jpg

Dark Matter Stack!

BLURR- a soft beautiful blending/eraser shadow

UNSEEN- a cool-medium delicious caramel brown

ENIGMA- a beautiful rusted red-brown

DARK MATTER- the most pigmented pitch-black

Okay, so both stacks are equally as awesome!  Prior to purchase, I showed SLIGHT favoritism to Dark Matter.  But, all of these shades compliment each other, and I’ve had so much fun mixing and matching.  It is true, they’re VERY highly pigmented and deliver great color that lasts all day without creasing, fallout and have are so easy to blend!  Amelie, of the Lovesick Stack, is such an original color, and so bright!  I’ve enjoyed putting this on my brow bone, as well as well as my bottom lash line (and truly every where else in between 😉 ).  Promiscuous is one of the brightest, most unique shades of purple that I own!  Love Sick contains the most sparkly colors.

Dark Matter is team captain of the matte crew.  It oftentimes is difficult to get matte eyeshadow that’s highly pigmented, especially for dark skin like mine.  Dark Matter is the truth, shows up so well on my skin and does not fade throughout the day.  Enigma, is amazing–I would say these collections are highly moving to the top of my favorite list!!!!  They’ve recently added Radioactive, which I’m not yet a super fan of and have not yet purchased.  We’ll see how that plays out…

At the end of the day, after dabbling in all that makeup, it’s great to have something organic to wash and cleanse your face and body!  Do you remember in my previous post when we touched on some of the great products from Christina Moss Naturals?

organic soapNo, this is not a roast!  (or maybe it is just me, I’m pretty imaginative).  This, is the organic, all-natural Glycerin Bath Bar! It lathered well, yet was very gentle on my skin, and I was able to even use this on my face!  It’s a smooth and silky consistency, and I didn’t experience any skin tightness which is great.  It comes with 2 bars and it won’t break the bank.  Here’s a little about the product:

Organic Skincare: Christina Moss Naturals

Christina Moss.jpg

Alright guys, so I’ve really got some deetz on some bomb-ass organic skincare products lately!  Have you heard of Christina Moss Naturals?  Their products are %100 pure/natural/organic.  My skin is pretty good, I can’t complain, so I really aim to use products that will keep it that way!  And I don’t want a bunch of gunk on my face so that it gets all on my baby and luvah!  Therefore, I’m happy to share what I’ve learned with you from the free products I received in exchange for my honest review!

facial washChristina Moss Facial Wash–Umm, I LOVE.  I’m seriously so simple with my facial care regimen.  It’s worked for me thus far, my skin is sensitive, and I don’t switch it up too much.  But as I get older, it occurred to me that maybe I should be doing something other than African Black Soap which I also love!  This product is extremely gentle, feels great on the skin, lathers a bit, tingles a tad, and isn’t drying AT ALL.  It has none of this stuff “Sulfates, No SLS, No SLES, No Parabens, No Propylene Glycol or PG Derivatives, No Harmful Chemicals, No fragrances or preservatives.” And, although I must admit that I don’t know what the heck some of that stuff is, I’m glad that it’s not in there, LOL!

Christina Moss Exfoliating Bath Gloves–Hee Hee…Oooh!  Gone Girl!  Okay, sorry, I couldn’t resist.  When I applied my facial wash, I used these fashionable exfoliating gloves to lather in a circular motion.  Felt great!  Says it’s not recommended for the face (whoops, I didn’t read that until after) but it was fine!  Not too hard, not too soft!  The only slight downfall is that it left little pieces of glitter on my face.  But I think I may just wash all the others prior to use, and I bet that solves the problem.

Removes dead skin cells and increases blood flow, reducing cellulite and improving the condition of your skin. Promotes healthy skin and helps repair damaged skin. Unclogs pores and revitalizes dull, tired skin. Will leave you clean and invigorated. Increases lather of your soap or body wash.

tonerChristina Moss Facial Toner–I have never used a toner before in LIFE.  And, I must admit, I had to do my in depth, highly documented, top of the line research Google prior to using.  Christina Moss says this about their toner:

PREPS AND HYDRATES YOUR SKIN, REDUCING PUFFINESS, INFLAMMATION AND REDNESS: Our formula prepares your skin for your beauty routine by penetrating deep into your pores to cleanse them while locking in hydration to increase elasticity. Your skin will be ready to absorb any serums, moisturizers or nutrients that you use afterwards. And not only that, it also HELPS FIGHT OILY SKIN. The ingredients we use remove excess oils while restoring pH balance to your skin, making it perfect for all skin types and crucial to prevent skin damage. Works well as a make-up remover too. Great for both women and men.

I’ve enjoyed it!  The facial toner feels tingly as well, and light!  And, it didn’t make my skin tight.

christina moss moisturizer.jpgChristina Moss Facial Moisturizer–I finished up with this!  The consistency of the product was great, it soaked into the skin well and it wasn’t too oily.  One thing that I didn’t turn flips for was the smell, it smells of black licorice.  But I did know that up front MADE WITH CERTIFIED ORGANIC INGREDIENTS – FREE OF ANY HARMFUL TOXIC PETROCHEMICALS: As such, it contains Star Anise Seed Oil, which gives it a natural, mild licorice scent. This evaporates shortly after application.” I’ve read this acts as a natural preservative, so that’s still a win–better than a lot of chemicals!  And, all of the products mentioned above didn’t have a smell!

So what do you think?  I really liked this company–they had great customer service as well so that’s an added bonus.  Have you tried something from them before?  Do you incorporate a toner into your daily skin care routine?

**stay tuned to hear more about this company, and some other great skin care products!

DermOrganic: Organic Skin Care Sampler

dermoganic skin care sampler

WILL WE BE FASHIONABLE?  I can’t get enough of organic skincare, and hope to be reviewing lots of these type of products in the future!  My face is pretty normal and/or occasionally combination with a slight side of dry in the winter.  The rest of my body tends to be a little more dry.  So I’m always on the hunt to find something I love!

DermOrganic  offers vegan and no-crap-stuff hair and skin products.  So, when I was provided with a free Skin Care Sampler for my honest, unbiased, expert, beauty product addicted review, I was more than thrilled!

The sampler comes with a Soapless Facial Cleanser, Facial Moisturizer, and a Moisture Lotion, all fragrance-free.

I didn’t wear makeup the day I tried it (I told ya I’ve been a bare-faced slouch this week, don’t judge me).  But the facial cleanser worked well–it was my first soapless facial cleanser.  Once I was done, my face didn’t feel overly dry and felt clean!    I followed up with the facial moisturizer, which was light with just the right amount of sheen and made my skin feel nice and look great the rest of the day!

I later tried the body lotion, and I wasn’t a fan–it didn’t really support my ash-free zone living!  It went on nice and gave a little moisture, but I didn’t really feel that it soaked into my skin, it sort of stayed on top.  And, after an hour or so, my hands and legs again felt dry and my feet looked similar to walking around in a package powder donuts.  Additionally, I didn’t like the smell of the lotion (I know, it’s fragrance free) but to me, it sort of smelled like plastic going on.  The smell quickly dissipated though after a few minutes, so that wasn’t major.  In all fairness though, I do tend to lean towards heavier lotions, butters and creams, so if you don’t, then this lotion may be your thing!

All-in-all, I think it’s worth trying!  And I love that they provide a sample pack with these items to try all together.  Have you heard of DermOrganic?
